Electric Oven Heating Elements: Tips For Dealing With Repairs

Blog

If you have an electric stove and oven, you might find at some point that you need an appliance repair technician to address a malfunctioning component. One of the most common reasons for appliance repair with an electric range is a malfunctioning heating element in the oven. For those who have never dealt with oven heating element issues, it's important to be able to recognize the signs. Here's a look at some of the key indications that your electric range needs a new heating element in the oven, and what can be done about it.

Signs Of A Malfunctioning Electric Heating Element

Before you can deal with a heating element in your oven, you need to be able to recognize when it needs attention. The good news is that there are some signs that can help you tell when your heating element might need replacement.

If your oven is heating inconsistently, unevenly, or not heating at all, those are all key indications that your heating element might need attention. You should keep a thermometer in your oven to monitor the temperature. This makes it easier to identify when it isn't heating the way that it should.

As your oven's heating element deteriorates, you might also find that the problem becomes visually obvious. For example, sometimes, you'll find that a segment of the heating element becomes super-heated and glows intensely right before it fails. You might also find that a segment of the element simply stops heating up completely.

Steps To Deal With A Malfunctioning Heating Element

If the oven heating element isn't functioning the way that it should, you'll want to call an appliance repair technician for help. They can replace the heating element in minutes. It's actually a far easier job than you might think.

The tricky part of the heating element replacement is ensuring that you get the right model. Once you have the right heating element, the replacement starts by unplugging the stove from the wall to cut the power.

Then, it's easiest to access the heating element and remove it with the racks pulled out of the oven. From there, you'll need to remove the retention screws on either side of the heating element where it meets the back wall of the oven. With those screws removed, pull the heating element straight forward until the connectors come clear of the oven's back wall.

With the ends of the element free, disconnect the wires from each side of the element. Connect those wires to the new element and then put the heating element into place at the bottom of the oven. Replace the retention screws and you can plug the oven back in. You'll find that it's a fairly short repair once the technician arrives.

These are some of the most important things to consider when you're dealing with an electric oven's heating element. Talk with an appliance repair technician today for more help.
